Long Tân - Có những sự lo ngại về sức khỏe tâm thần của các cựu chiến binh Úc tham gia trận Long Tân và tuần này đã trở về nơi diễn ra trận chiến nổi tiếng, sau khi nhà cầm quyền Việt Nam ra lệnh hủy bỏ buổi lễ kỷ niệm 50 năm trận đánh này.
Ông Dan Tehan, Bộ trưởng bộ Cựu chiến binh nói ông thất vọng một cách chua chát với quyết định trên của Việt Nam.
Ông Tehan cho biết chính phủ Việt Nam cho Úc hay quyết định của họ vào cuối ngày thứ Ba 16/8 viện cớ các sự tế nhị sâu sắc trong xứ.
Ông Tehan cho các phóng viên ở Canberra biết vào chiều thứ Tư 17/8 là hơn 1,000 người Úc đã sang Việt Nam đế kỷ niệm 50 năm trận đánh này và ông hy vọng nhà cầm quyền Việt Nam sẽ thay đổi quyết định vào ngày mai. Ông nói:
“Cho chúng ta biết sự hủy bỏ vào phút chót như vậy, nói thẳng ra đó là một cú đá vào bụng”.
Thủ tướng Malcolm Turnbull đã yêu cầu có một cuộc điện đàm với Thủ tướng Việt Nam về quyết định trên.
Ông Turnbull nói ông thất vọng tràn trề với quyết định đó.
“Chúng tôi hiểu đó là vấn đề do chính phủ Việt Nam quyết định là các buổi lễ nào được cử hành trong nước của họ. Nhưng quyết định này, và đặc biệt là thời gian tính của nó, cho thấy một sự không đếm xỉa gì đến những người Úc đã tin tưởng mà sang Việt Nam để tham dự vào các sinh hoạt trong tuần này”.
Một nguồn tin từ chính phủ Việt Nam nói với đài ABC là tòa lãnh sự Úc đã hứa là sẽ có một sinh hoạt “không nhộn nhịp”.
Tuy nhiên, buổi dạ tiệc, trình diễn văn nghệ và sự ước tính hơn 1,000 người Úc ở đài tưởng niệm Long Tân được xem như một cuộc liên hoan thiếu tế nhị.
Bộ Ngoại giao Úc đã có một bản thông báo nói rằng:
“Chính phủ Việt Nam đã cho chính phủ Úc biết là họ sẽ không cho phép một buổi lễ để tưởng niệm Ngày Cựu Chiến Binh Việt Nam ở đài kỷ niệm Long Tân vào lúc 3:30 giờ chiều ngày 18 tháng Tám được tiến hành”
“Một phái đoàn chính thức gồm có hai vị đại sứ Úc và Tân tây lan sẽ đặt vòng hoa và chúng tôi được biết các nhóm nhỏ cũng có thể đến viếng trong ngày”.
“Chính phủ Úc rất thất vọng về quyết định trên, cùng cung cách nó được thi hành, quá cận ngày kỷ niệm”.
Tin trên đã đến khi cảnh sát Việt Nam chận lối vào đài kỷ niệm Long Tân trong khi các viên chức địa phương đang bàn thảo xem có cho buổi lễ dự trù được tiến hành vào ngày mai hay không.
Cựu chiến binh Úc Peter Manucci từ Tây Úc và nhóm “các pháo thủ Vietnam” của ông đã không được phép vào địa điểm hôm thứ Tư.
“Tôi rất tức giận. Có 3,500 người đã ghi tên để vào thăm địa điểm và đó là lý do tại sao họ không vui vẻ”.
Ông Manucci nói mỗi du khách đã trả trước $12.
“Họ đã lấy tiền của chúng tôi… Thế là mất toi $30,000, cám ơn rất nhiều”
Một toán quay phim của đài ABC đã bị chận lại cách địa điểm hành lễ chừng 200m. Không có lý do được nêu ra nhưng lối vào đã không bị cấm hôm thứ Ba.
Lễ kỷ niệm trận Long Tân luôn là một đề tài nhức nhối ở Việt Nam.
Mỗi năm, các nhóm nhỏ dược phép vào thăm nhưng không được đeo huy chương, mặc quân phục hay ca hát. Mãi đến năm 2006, giới chức Việt Nam mới cho trổi bản The Last Post.
Tuy các buổi lễ đã được tổ chức từ năm 1989 nhưng đối với nhiều cựu chiến binh Úc, đây là lần đầu tiên họ trở lại thăm Việt Nam từ sau cuộc chiến.

Long Tan: Vietnamese authorities cancel 50th anniversary commemoration event
There are concerns for the mental health of Long Tan veterans who have returned to the site of their famous battle, after a last-minute decision by the Vietnamese Government to cancel today's 50th anniversary commemorations.
Veterans' Affairs Minister Dan Tehan said he was bitterly disappointed with Vietnam's decision to cancel the commemorations at Long Tan.
Mr Tehan said the Vietnamese Government notified Australia of its decision late on Tuesday, citing deep sensitivities in the country.
He told reporters in Canberra this afternoon that more than 1,000 Australians had travelled to Vietnam to mark the 50th anniversary of the battle and he was hoping the Government reversed its decision before today.
"For us to be given such short notice of the cancellation is to put it in very frank terms, a kick in the guts," he said.
"I don't think this is the way that you should treat a friend.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has requested a phone call with his Vietnamese counterpart over the decision.
Mr Turnbull said he was deeply disappointed over the decision.
"We understand it is a matter for the Government of Vietnam to decide what commemorations are held in its country," he said.
"But this decision, and especially its timing, shows a disregard for those Australians who have in good faith travelled to Vietnam to participate in this week's events."
A Vietnamese Government source told the ABC the Australian Consulate promised to hold a "low key" event.
However, the gala dinner, concert and the expectation of more than 1,000 Australians at the Long Tan memorial cross was seen as an insensitive celebration.
"The Vietnamese Government has advised the Australian Government that it will not permit the ceremony to commemorate Vietnam Veteran's Day at the Long Tan cross site at 3:30pm on August 18 to proceed," DFAT said in a statement.
"An official party, including the Australian and New Zealand ambassadors, will lay a wreath and we understand small groups will still have access to the site on the day.
"The Government is deeply disappointed at this decision, and the manner in which it was taken, so close to the commemoration service taking place.
The news came after Vietnamese police blocked access to the Long Tan memorial site, as local officials discussed whether to allow a planned event to go ahead today.
West Australian Vietnam veteran Peter Manucci and his tour group of "Vietnam gunners" were refused entry to the battlefield on Wednesday.
"I am pretty well pissed off," he said.
"There is 3,500 people who are booked in to go the Long Tan cross and that's why they are not happy."
Mr Manucci said each visitor paid around $12 in advance to see the site.
"They have our money ... that's $30,000 in their pocket, gone, thank you very much," he said.
An ABC crew was stopped about 200 metres before the site's memorial cross.
No clear reason was given for blocking access to the site, which is on a private farm, but access to the cross was open on Tuesday.
The anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan has long been a delicate topic in Vietnam.
Each year small groups are allowed to visit the cross, but no medals, uniforms or songs are allowed.
Since 2006, the Vietnamese authorities have allowed the playing of The Last Post.
Memorial events have been held at Long Tan since 1989.
For many veterans, this would have been their first visit to Vietnam since the war.

Cancellation of the 50th Anniversary Service at Long Tan
The Vietnamese Government has advised the Australian Government that it will not permit the ceremony to commemorate Vietnam Veteran’s Day at the Long Tan cross site at 15:30 on 18 August to proceed.
The Government is deeply disappointed at this decision, and the manner in which it was taken, so close to the commemoration service taking place.
Australia’s Ambassador has registered our deep concerns with the Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs. The Government is seeking urgent calls with Vietnamese counterparts at the most senior levels to register our concerns.
Australia has been working closely with Vietnamese authorities for 18 months to prepare for this event. Memorial events have been held at Long Tan since 1989.
Australian veterans and their families had planned to attend a ceremony at Long Tan marked by mutual respect to remember and honour the sacrifice of those lost in the Vietnam War from both sides.
For many veterans, this would have been their first visit to Vietnam since the war. For the more than one thousand Australians who have travelled to Vietnam to attend the 50th anniversary memorial service this is bitterly disappointing news.
The Vietnam Veterans’ Association and the Vietnam Veterans’ Federation have been briefed by the Government on the decision taken by the Vietnamese Government. “The Vietnamese Community in Australia understands and appreciates the wishes of the Vietnam Veterans to pay tribute to their fallen comrades in Long Tan, Viet Nam on the 50th anniversary of the battle.
However, the cancellation at the last minutes of the service by the Vietnamese communist government after 18 months of allowing its preparation to take place is disrespectful, cruel, mean spirited and inhumane to thousands of Australian Vietnam Veterans, many of whom are frail, in old age and have traveled to VN using up their pension moneys and savings.
We, the Vietnamese Community in Australia and all Australians share the pain, the anger and the profound disappointment of our Vietnam Veterans on this betrayal of the Vietnamese Communist Government. Let us now focus and pay an even greater respect to our Long Tan and other Australian fallen soldiers at commemorative services held throughout Australia today with the dignity and honours that they deserve. It’s our view that whether the commemoration takes place at the commemorative site in Vietnam or on Australia soil, it carries the same meaning.
Let the famous statement made by the late President of the Republic of Vietnam Nguyen Van Thieu: “Do not listen to what the Vietnamese Communists say but look carefully at what they do” be a reminder to us all, including the Vietnam Veterans and the Australian Government, when dealing with the Vietnamese Communist Regime.
We call upon the Australian government to reconsider where Australian aids should go after this incident. Our hard earned tax-payers aid moneys should not be paid unconditionally to a government that gives no due respect for the Australian Government and to our veterans.

50 năm trận chiến Long Tân
Hôm nay anh chủ tịch BCH CĐNVTD Liên bang và tôi nói chuyện với ABC radio Raf Apstein, và 3AW buổi chiều với Tom Elliott và tối nay với Steve Price & Adnrew Bolt để chia sẻ quan điểm của CĐNVTD Vic về quyết định của đảng CSVN.
Đây là một việc làm trẻ con và đáng coi thường của đại diện một quốc gia. Chắc chắn hôm nay và ngày mai tất cả các toà lãnh sự các quốc gia sẽ báo tin tức này đến chính phủ của họ.
Thương cho những cựu chiến binh Úc mong có dịp nhớ lại dĩ vãng và uống với đồng đội đã nằm xuống một ly bia mà cũng làm không được. Chia sẻ đôi lời với ông Ken Foster chủ tịch hội Cựu Chiến Binh Úc mà cảm thấy xót xa. Úc lên tiếng phản đối trước việc nhà cầm quyền CSVN từ chối cho các cựu quân nhân Úc tổ chức sự kiện đánh dấu 50 năm ngày xảy ra trận đánh nhiều thương vong nhất của Quân Đội Hoàng Gia Úc trong cuộc chiến tranh Việt Nam - trận Long Tân.

Lễ kỷ niệm trận đánh Long Tân dự trù diễn ra ở xã Long Tân, huyện Đất Đỏ, tỉnh Bà Rịa - Vũng Tàu ngày Thứ Năm 18 tháng 8. Truyền thông Úc cho hay hơn 1,000 cựu chiến binh Úc và gia đình họ đã đến Việt Nam để dự buổi lễ này.

Bộ Ngoại Giao Úc cho biết họ đã gửi thư khiếu nại đến nhà cầm quyền CSVN. Trong thư, Úc bày tỏ “sự thất vọng sâu sắc trước quyết định, và cách tiến hành quyết định, quá gần dịp kỷ niệm”.
Thông cáo của Úc nói rằng: “Các cựu chiến binh Úc và gia đình đã lên kế hoạch tham dự buổi lễ ở Long Tân có sự kính trọng dành cho cả hai phía, để tưởng nhớ và vinh danh sự hy sinh của những người đã ngã xuống trong Chiến Tranh Việt Nam ở cả hai phía.”
Bộ Trưởng Cựu Chiến Binh Úc, ông Dan Tehan nói rằng việc nhà cầm quyền CSVN bất ngờ cấm tổ chức buổi lễ tưởng niệm trận đánh Long Tân vào phút chót là "một cú đá vào bụng" đối với người Úc, và không phải là hành động của một người bạn.
Truyền thông Úc hôm 17/08 nói về sự thất vọng ê chề của khoảng 1,000 cựu chiến binh Úc, đã bỏ ra những khoản tiền lớn để du hành đến Việt Nam, nhằm tham dự buổi lễ này. Bộ Trưởng Tehan nhấn mạnh rằng chính quyền Úc đã ý thức được sự nhạy cảm của lễ kỷ niệm, và đã lên kế hoạch tổ chức một buổi lễ không gây ồn ào.
Báo Úc The New Daily hôm 17/08 cho biết, Thủ Tướng Úc Malcolm Turnbull trong cùng ngày vẫn còn tìm cách đối thoại với Thủ Tướng CSVN về vụ này, với hy vọng phía Việt Nam sẽ thay đổi ý định.
Các nghi lễ ở Úc vẫn được cử hành tại trụ sở Hạ Viện ở Canberra vào tối 17/08 và trong ngày 18/08.
Có 18 binh sĩ Úc và hàng trăm binh sĩ CSVN đã ngã xuống trong trận đánh ngày 18 tháng 8 năm 1966.
