Mayor Schaaf and I are looking for some exceptional candidates for the Mayor's Special Assistant and Scheduler positions and we wanted know if you have any folks that you would like to recommend. We are looking for folks that speak Cantonese or Vietnamese as the Mayor really wants to make sure that we have language diversity on her team. Please send me names of folks that come time mind. Office of Mayor Libby Schaaf –Special Assistant to the Mayor Job Description

Mayor-Elect Libby Schaaf is putting together a motivated and enthusiastic team to work closely with her to help our beloved city achieve its full potential. Mayor-Elect Schaaf is looking for passionate individuals who care deeply about making this community a better place to live.

Position Summary
The Special Assistant to the Mayor will provide policy, administrative and logistical support to Mayor Schaaf and the Mayor’s Office. The Special Assistant will provide policy analysis and briefs for the Mayor on a wide variety of topics, assist in organizing and staffing meetings on various issues, attend hearings, community meetings and other events as necessary and undertake any other duties as assigned by the Mayor or Chief of Staff.

Applicants must be upbeat, high-energy professionals with a passion for helping people, improving city government and bettering Oakland.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree, preferably in an area such as Public Policy, Public Administration, Law, Political Science, City Planning, Social Welfare, etc.
• Proven ability to work in a demanding, fast-paced, unpredictable environment.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills and public speaking skills.
• Ability to prepare clear and concise narrative reports.
• Ability to recognize and respond diplomatically to complex and sensitive problems.
• Ability to reason logically and creatively to resolve complex problems; collect, synthesize and analyze a wide variety of information; formulate, interpret and explain laws, policies and procedures.
• Excellent organization, project management and time management skills.
• Ability to prioritize workload and shift attention quickly among changing tasks and priorities.
• Ability to prepare agendas for and lead small work groups.
• Ability to listen to and build consensus among diverse groups including local leaders and community based organizations.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with, and represent the Mayor before government officials, city managers and staff, community groups and the public.
• Able to work long hours, evenings and weekends as needed, with access to a car for community meetings.

Preferred
• Bilingual in Cantonese, Vietnamese or Spanish
• Experience working in or with local governments
• Experience working with Oakland stakeholders and familiarity with local politics

Compensation depending on experience between $45,000-60,000. Generous benefits package.
